prozac and migraine
The underlying cause for my great increase in migraine headaches is due to depression ( and I was on 9 weeks sick leave this summer) So having visited my doctor yesterday I convinced her ( and myself) that I did not want preventatives ( was worried about all the side effects) I felt that if I could get at the cause of what had triggered this great increase then maybe the migraine attacks would be lessened, hence the prozac….do you think I’m crazy or might this work?
i have no side effects at all from prozac. it does make me a little more patient, but i’m still depressed.
I say that you don’t have anything to lose by trying the prozac. It did not help me with my migraines or depression, but everyone is different and will always react differently. Some of the preventatives that I have taken have mainly lowered my blood pressure so I know what you mean about not wanting to take them. Try out the prozac and let us know if you get any relief from either the migraines or the depression.
I do believe the Prozac might very well work, but not because depression is causing your headaches. Depressed or not, Prozac does work for many people as a migraine preventative. I am one of them. I started taking Prozac a few years ago as a preventative (no, I was not depressed) and 90% of my headaches stopped immediately. Unfortunately, some people tend to gain weight on Prozac, and I gained about 30 or 40 lbs, so after about two years, I went off the Prozac. At that point, the headaches came back.
Now I’m on the Atkins Diet (high protein, low carb) to try to lose the weight and guess what? The migraines nearly stopped again! I’ve heard two people say now that Atkins made their headaches worse, but for me, it stopped them. I guess everyone has to find out what works for them.
But to answer your original question — yes, Prozac is often used as a migraine preventative. But it has nothing to do with being depressed; it has to do with the levels of serotonin in your brain. And it’s very effective for some people.
well today is the 4th day of taking prozac, this is the first drug of this type I have ever taken and boy do I feel tired. My wife ( who also takes prozac) says this reaction will pass together with the nausiness I feel, and in a few days I should feel the difference. I hope so cause right now I feel rather low, I’m back at work tomorrow and hope I can regain some energy by then. Still no sign of any migraines so far…here’s hoping
That is wonderful news about not having any migraines so far. As far as the nausea and no energy, yes it should get better with time, at least that has been my experience on the many many anti-depressants that I myself have taken. I am very excited for you. Please let us know how you do.
